Greetings!
Yesterday I spent much of the day converting my laptop from using wmi to
using Ion3. I had used Ion2 before I went over to wmi, so I was
familiar with the general ideas, though I see that the details of the
configuration files have changed.
First of all -- yay! It works. It isn't clunky. I don't have to click
on floating windows twice so that they get my click, and they don't
hide themselves when I switch workspaces and come back again. Yeah, I got
tired of the irritations of wmi (and tired of waiting for wmii to become
stable, I don't think it ever will!) Okay, so I've exchanged the
irritations of wmi for the different irritations of ion, but I'm still
all enthusiastic at the moment. The greatest noticeable improvement is
the status bar, I like that.
My custom keybindings work, my dock apps are in the dock, and after some
hiccups, my custom "look" file works. I think the documentation on the
site is a bit out of date. I ended up just copying one of the existing
"look" files and altering that.
I even got the python "workspace_indicator" script downloaded from the
Ion site to work. Unfortunately, I had to resort to that script because
the "workspace" status-bar indicator from the Ion3 scripts collection
didn't work. I would much rather have the current workspace indicated
on the status bar -- is anyone likely to correct or make a new script
for that?
Another question: I couldn't really find much documentation about the
dock -- when I first tried to use it, I got errors when it was at the
default "embedded" mode, so I changed it to "floating" mode and it
worked. What's "embedded" mode and how would I get it working?
Oh, and I am using the 20050116 version on GenToo (that is the only one
indicated as stable in portage).
