Gentoo packages are somehow different from software packages of other
distributions.Someone who is interested in maintaining a package for
ion3 writes an so called ebuild, which cares about applying patches,
compiling from source, installing paths, doing chmod/chown on executables
and so on.

After some time, when the ebuild of ion3 doesn't break anything for
the maintainer or Gentoo users don't send in bug reports, a package
is marked as stable and appear in the stable branch.

Anytime a user can choose to install newer versions of ion3, if he
accepts the installation of as "unstable" marked versions.

I use also Gentoo, but Ion3-20051029 without any problems.
