The worst experience I've had along those lines in the year or so that I've been using Ion (on gentoo with ~x86) was a month or so ago, when some change caused the statusbar to start erroring on load if the MAIL env var wasn't set. This /appeared/ to cause it to not continue loading my bindings, though it wasn't hard to figure out the defaults and get things working again (basically just commenting out unneeded chunks of the statusbar cfg).
