HTML5 Sounds good in theory but every developer knows the challenges of how all the different browsers interpret the "standards".

Great case for Flash as the true "Universal client"....but competing (new) technologies are good to move things forward.

You are right HTML 5 is not flash. However much of what you can do
with Flash you can do with HTML 5.

For example it does the same kinds of animations and transitions that
you can do with Flash and it does them with fewer lines of code. It
does local database access and storage. When you need to contact a
server for more data or other communication you use the XMLHttpRequest
object to do AJAX just as you can do AJAX in flash.

For video streaming you use a video tag.

With these abilities it seems to me that most of what someone uses
Flash for can be done in HTML 5. If not, what am I missing?

If this is so then it seems to me that this Flash vs. HTML 5 argument
comes down to nothing more than just a preference of the developer/
engineer for one or the other. This, of course, is if we ignore that
IE will more than likely always be slow to adopt this new
functionality as it has with most others.

What i do know (or i'm pretty sure about) is that mobile handhelds are going to
be, in the next 5 years or a bit more, the way most of people are going to get
connected with (phone, iPad, whatever has a touchscreen, …).
So if Flash Player is not compatible with those, everything is possible (even
the death of the format, to be replace by another - even by Adobe itself !)…
but i'm agree with the fact HTML5 is not Flash: different formats, different
goals for different needs !

People write for some market share that they feel comfortable with,
that's all. Whether it's IE, or Flash, or HTML5 (which is basically
being written by one person), it doesn't really matter that much.
What is at least decent about Apple is that Webkit and Safari are
leading the implementation of a variety of web specs, including HTML5
and CSS. That is progressing our capabilities to deliver content,
unlike MSFT who pretty much stopped development on IE for a long time.

Standards are good.
Companies who shun them should go away.

here's the classic conversation we have with clients who want their website
to be linked on iphone friendly sites and from our app:
"sorry but your lovely looking website doesnt work on an iphone etc"
today some have said "this ipad looks great"
"your website wont work on that either"
however it does mean extra work(income) in making an iphone/ipad friendly
website for them ;)
