Greg, For question #1: The gray smiley face and ? mark are caused by one of the following conditions: 1) The clients are using non-routable IP addresses (behind a NAT gateway). For this one, each client needs to set the following registry key: In HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\IPSWITCH\MESSENGER\VERSION1.0\SETTINGS, the value "Client Uses NAT" must be set to (integer value) "1". Then restart the client. 2) The address in the contact list must match exactly the address of the user account used to log on. The address must also be the full account name such as [EMAIL PROTECTED]
For question #2: I don't have enough information to determine the exact problem, but it sounds like your server is behind NAT as well. This is a supported configuration, but requires a couple extra steps. These steps include specifying the NAT Gateway Host on the "General" page of the server manager, and forwarding traffic on port 5177 from the router to the IM server. Also note, the clients must login using the "public" address of the IM server (which will actually be the router since it is forwarding traffic), not the private address of the IM server. If you are still having problems, please send us your sysmmdd.txt file so we can take a look at your configuration. For the time being I am using IM server for authentication. A found a couple of issues that I've not been able to find a solution to in the documents. 1) When I login to the IM server from my client on our internal network it authenticates fine but is shows my status as a Gray smile face and ? mark. 2) I opened up 5177 on our firewall and tried to connect from outside out network and found that it was trying to connect to an internal ip address. Not sure why it was trying to do that? If the client is not seeing the server at all, its probably a port issue. If the client connects and then everything is unknown, its probably a NAT issue. Bob -- Robert S.
