Force has nothing to do with the level of our fencing. There are plenty of 
fencers in Ireland,myself included, who would be capable of hitting quite hard 
and probably drive a broken blade through a jacket. It really comes down to the 
angle at which the blade impacts at and whether the opponent is coming forwards 
or not.   However what I think is different in Ireland is that we are not so 
agressive in our fencing and that probably prevents people from getting 
seriously hurt.   But otherwise most people would be capable of generating the 
force to puncture a jacket with a broken blade.   So I suppose a plastron is a 
good idea afterall.
