Well i would have thought that beginners were encouraged to enter tournaments. 
Maybe the female fencers need more encouragement? Or do we need more senior 
female fencers coming to training so that the beginners don't think its a male 
dominated sport?   Is there are way to change training sessions that would suit 
female fencers better? I can only speak for UCD but its guys running the 
training so maybe what we are doing is not how girls would like it to be run.   
I think there is a bit of difficulty in getting girls to change weapons. Alot 
of them think sabre is too violent and that epee is too heavy, but then once 
they do it for a while they stick at it. However the problem is getting them to 
try the new weapon for a while.Negative reinforcement as practiced by Owen 
probably doesn't help
