Hi there, I'm going to put my two cents worth in, as a competitive and yet
(hopefully) not too aggressive and loud female fencer (though I shall leave it
the women fencers of Ireland to let me know if otherwise). Having been on the
scene in Ireland for 6 years, I have generally found the womens competitions to
be sidelined and rarely considered a good event in itself. If there are time
constraints, generally the female competitions are the ones that suffer. Having
said that, our fencing in general does not seem to reflect that of the male
competition, both in quality and numbers of entries, etc. One thing I would say
though, is that if you are getting new trophies for comps, the womens ones
don't have to different to the mens. If women are always rewarded with less,
they may be less likely to feel valued enough to come and fence, and that
realistically should be our goal when trying to encourage females to stay in
the sport.
