----------------------------------------------------------- New Message on Irish Fencing Forum
----------------------------------------------------------- From: insanemisskitty Message 10 in Discussion way-hey-hey! happy to be back ont he boards after a weekend away (and my weren't you busy beavers whilst i was gone?!) righto, speaking from a girlie perspective I agree with nearly all of the comments made about the possible causes here. Personally I am still terrified of fencing certain people (of the male variety) on the piste, and a girls-only session would be lovely to have one of these days. Just so long as you ensured females came to mixed sessions as well to improve their strength and aggression (I tend to hold back the attacks a bit with females for fear of hurting them). with regards the current sessions (not that I have been to many of them!) in UCD, I don't think it really suits certain dispositions (i.e. mine!). I'm a pretty social creature, and come down to not only train, but also catch up with my friends. Certain individuals find the two activities incompatible and have banned it from training, this reduces the enjoyment of it, which could be part of the downfall of females fencing! And thus, you get a lot of fencing girls coming on the nights out, but a)not having much of an incentive to train if they cannot socialise *whilst* training. (admit it guys, there can be a lot of hanging about, and being told what to do with my spare time whilst waiting for a piste isn't pleasant!) b)being slighty intimidated by a lot of loud blokes c)are not able to get hold of the right club equipment (this is vicious circle territory here though, less enthusiasm for the sport means less investment in gear, means they are the first to suffer when club gear is broken). As we are a minority, we also get the less attention at competition, and also seem to have more piste/president/poule problems (or lack thereof) I will tell you straight that the only reason I participated in so many comps last year was because of the rankings. I think I concur with Eimear's suugestion that we are not as competitive. (or at least, again with the visious circle theory. we are so low in numbers a lot of the competitions seems to blur into one, same people, same results.) the suggestion of getting more senior girls down is a nice one, but at the moment face it guys, there are a grand total of 6 "student" senior girls in UCD. hey, I've just had a controversial thought, perhaps its just that we are so much better at multi-tasking! We have other commitments, tee-hee ----------------------------------------------------------- To stop getting this e-mail, or change how often it arrives, go to your E-mail Settings. http://groups.msn.com/IrishFencingForum/_emailsettings.msnw Need help?
