Emma Kellam commented on AVRO-3554:
-----------------------------------
Hi Oscar,
Thank you for your time and feedback! I took another run at it and made some
revisions based on your suggestions, as well as added a few more experiments
just to see how they might look :D Below is a link to a PDF file of the
revisions:
[Avro Logo Revisions
V1|[http://drive.google.com/file/d/1ZRTHgTSr76L6TWhHvJxL7j05SJvtssfJ/view|https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ZRTHgTSr76L6TWhHvJxL7j05SJvtssfJ/view?usp=sharing]]
For the sake of speed, I used the existing icon and rotated it upwards for
designs *V4* and {*}V5{*}, eliminating the base of the airplane as it wouldn't
be visible from that particular angle. If we like the look of the upward angle
I will create a new version and redraw the blobby bits for it as they don't
quite match the new angle as is.
I brightened the existing green and purple colours of the pigeon head in design
{*}V6{*}, but I can also change them to different shades of green and purple if
preferred!
Wanted to experiment by flipping the original icon horizontally to see how it
would look going down in the opposite direction for designs *V7* and {*}V8{*}.
In design *V8* I adjusted the size and angle of the base of the airplane, as
well as made the overall downward angle steeper to follow the angle of the 'A'
in 'Avro'.
Finally, in design *V9,* I returned to the original orientation but with the
new adjusted base size and angle from the *V8* design, which makes it look more
streamlined. I also adjusted the overall downward angle slightly so that the
far right slope of the icon is the exact opposite angle of the far left slope
of the 'A' in 'Avro' (hope that makes sense haha! kinda like this \ / )
Also if we'd like to avoid the paper airplane logo looking too similar to GCP
icons because of the colour I'm more than happy to change it up! Just let me
know what colour(s) you'd like to try out and I'll export some new versions :)
Thanks again!

> There was a quick discussion with Apache Trademarks along the lines "If it
> ever came to a legal challenge, would we care enough to defend our usage? If
> not, changing it discreetly and voluntarily is the best route."
> The result: we _must_ change our logo this year to some original art.
>
> Criteria for a new logo, as discussed on the mailing list:
> [https://lists.apache.org/thread/m5w7fmkjnrl8m4hlbw8xhzr4v69xg3ml]:
> Must:
> * be unique and not similar to anything “out there”
> * be available in a vector format (SVG) so it can be scaled with full
> accuracy
> Should:
> * show either something of the name (like Beam, Airflow, Ant, Drill) or what
> it does (like Mahout, Bookkeeper, Ratis, Pulsar)
> * have 2 variants: Square/Circle (social media, favicon, etc) and rectangle
> (top banner)
> Could:
> * have the banner logo be the compact logo with the name attached, or more
> elaborate
> Would:
> * have limited colors; at most 5-10 (so like Iceberg, not like Flex with the
> gradients)
>
> _To allow sufficient artistic freedom, we should limit new requirements.
> Instead, please add ideas in the comments._
