Lars Hofhansl commented on HBASE-12859:
---------------------------------------

Good question what "stable" means. We could define it to mean "we won't remove
of break existing stuff from/in it".

In any case we know we can safely do this:
# get this into master
# get this in 1.1
# in 1.0 we only change the base classes and not the interfaces (need to check
how easy that is to do with the new admin interface, since the interfaces are
intertwined with PB a bit)
# ditto for 0.98.

We can also choose to simply not do #3 and #4 for now.

+1 on master and 1.1?

> In various scenarios it is helpful to know a guaranteed timestamp up to which
> all data in a table was major compacted.
> We can do that keeping a major compaction timestamp in META.
> A client then can iterate all region of a table and find a definite
> timestamp, which is the oldest compaction timestamp of any of the regions.
