There's also a third thing, you can pick up more files, that way you get read 
perf, low write amplification, but bursty compactions. Which is also the 
problem for many people as far as I know, since they run major compactions 
manually.
Agree with all the improvements above being configurable except sorting, for 
sorting I am not sure. I am usually in favor of allowing people to improve perf 
at the risk of shooting themselves in the foot, so as long as we make it very 
explicit that they will get less guarantees than the refguide says, maybe it 
should be configurable too. Not certain how important this guarantee is.
