I took a few of your hints as well. Thanks Grisemine. I've been dying to try
gingkoapp.com, but no time yet. Take a look at truenovelist.com which is
interesting, but look at their blog.  There's a long list of apps for writers
online.  To keep this thread on Open Office Outlining. This thread is well over
a decade old. That actually does say something. There is an interesting
extension (http://extensions.openoffice.org/en/project/organon). Maybe that
will help someone.  Looked buggy to me. 

There are lots of alternatives for the particular reason folks want outlining.
I don't like Google Docs, but it has a massive list of add-ons that will do
about anything. I don't know why great open source like Open Office craves
'customers', I'm glad to be one, but folks will leave them just as quick as any
other if they aren't getting what think they need. Everything on my hard drive
is open document format.
