Others have suggested using other software as the outliner, the problem is that once you have moved from outlining to (O|L)O, you then no longer have access to the outlining facilities. The almost seamless switching is one of the attractions of the Word approach. To ther (don't know why I'm bothering, you won't listen). Just because a lot of people like a specific feature of Word, it doesn't make us MS lovers. If you think that, you are an idiot.
