Matt,
I too had the same intentions when I started jal.sunish.net. But I found
that people on jallist are mostly happy with what they have. They are happy
with the mailing list. There were many discussions on jallist too regarding
the same. There was Stef's site, Wouter's site, Berts site ( which had most
of it content removed when he published the book), Vasile's Surducan's and
Javier's site When jalv2 project started there was a wiki with lots of info
with each separate contributor page and all. A centralised site for a newbie
was discussed many times.

I had put both jal and jalv2 manuals on to the site and wanted blogs, forums
and all on to my web site. I downloaded all of jallist files and thought of
getting permission from each user and putting it on jal.sunish.net. I
created user accounts for the main contributors so that they can do the
moderation, add content etc. But it didn't get enough momentum and part of
the problem I feel is that when the site is hosted with a domain in your
name, people tend to think that you are going to hijack the project. Another
issue is that most of the big contributors are not young people who can
adapt to changes. Anything done against what they are used will be taken as
offensive. Also personally I didn't have the time to update and maintain the
content and layout. Even the theme was not modified from the default.

With your kind of enthusiasm and the enthusiasm of the most acive jallib
members, we can build a site first, have a domain name registered, add
content with little clutter and have the site running fast. For actually
creating and testing the site you don't even have to have a domain. We can
test everything locally at our own machines using any AMP (Apache MySQL PHP)
packs like WAMP for windows or linux equivalents. Forums are the last thing
that jallist people are looking for, most are happy with jallist and jallib,
so that should be the last thing for the new site. Keep up your good work
and for the site learn any good content management system (CMS), drupal was
my choice and is the choice of the all the open source telephony guys,
including asterisk, freepbx, trixbox, freeswitch etc. In the long run
maintaining the site without CMS would praactially be very difficult.

Best regards,
Sunish
