Actually glcd_write_char is not required. It is optional since glcd_common can write characters on it's own.
glcd_common may be faster or slower then a glcd_write_char in the ks0108 library depending on the method of writing a character. Of course you will want to write characters as fast as possible :) stm032qvt-003 sample has an example use of the pseudo var "glcd", and does not use glcd_write_char. I don't own a ks0108 so I am unable to test. Matt.
