About Java 3D and SGI and CAVES - Java 3D can be used for CAVE environments. The real question here is what to do about SGI. The Java 3D development team creates the API and the implementation for Solaris (SPARC) and Windows (various flavors). We license this technology to systems vendors to port to their platform. Just getting Java 3D to work on a platform with OpenGL and a windowing system and underlying Java2 is not a huge deal. The time and effort (why we license this) is the ongoing support that is needed. Items that come to mind: - Packaging in the OS's native release format - Testing on currently supported platforms, and older ones if that is what is required. - Fixing bugs and making improvements in the underlying Java implementation. - Providing telephone/email support on things that dont work on that platform. - Fixing problems/issues regarding the native OpenGL libraries - Syncing with other releases (OS, Java, etc.) We would love to have SGI sign up for the most current releases. We have been in contact with them. The best thing for ALL of you to do is contact SGI and tell them that you want Java 3D, version 1.2(.1) on IRIX now. They should listen to their customers. By the way, you can get Sun equipment to drive 3 or 4 graphics boards from Sun. http://www.sun.com/desktop/visualize/ and, there are Windows systems that can do the same. ------------- Begin Forwarded Message ------------- Date: Wed, 17 Jan 2001 09:48:34 -0500 From: Bob Gray <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: [JAVA3D] Dark CAVES To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] This is bad news for me. The people from SUN were helpful and pointed out the need for Java3D 1.2 (current version on SGI is 1.1.3). After some delay, I got a reply from the SGI folks. It was not encouraging. Basically, Java3D 1.2 does not seem a priority in their TODO list. Dear all,
A while back I inquired about using Java3D to manage a CAVE with SGI
hardware. The people from SUN were helpful and pointed out the need for
Java3D 1.2 (current version on SGI is 1.1.3).
After some delay, I got a reply from the SGI folks. It was not encouraging.
Basically, Java3D 1.2 does not seem a priority in their TODO list.
Cheers
