Thanks much everyone for your input. John, I checked out that comparison page and it helped. There were a few 'we believes' in there that caused an eyebrow to raise... I would have felt more comfortable with 'we've found'... :)
Taware and Jacob, yours is the approach that I will take. Fred, while I agree that my use of the SDK protects me (somewhat) from the other side of the fence... as a professional developer I feel I always have to take into consideration the end user, no matter the scale. According to the comparison page John sent me to, frame rates for OpenGL are about 30% to 50% faster. That's significant enough for me to consider OpenGL as the preferred SDK. Thanks again folks.
