just some additional info....

For texture-based volume rendering, Doug Gehringer has a neat demo
which is available in j3d.org. Just Curious - if textures are what
you are planning to use, then why bother with ray-casting ?
And for ray-casting, you can look at the series of papers by
Marc Levoy at Stanford, and the shear-warp factorization method
of Lacroute and Levoy.
