public comments about Sun's commitment. Even if it is in a holding
pattern, I would assume that means "no new versions in the forseeable
future", not "no bug fixes for what we've put out there".

Based on my previous experience with Sun on other projects, that is exactly what it means. "Stalled" is their euphamism for "dead". The project won't be resurrected unless someone pays them to do it. In two of the cases, companies were willing to purchase the code license to continue it, but gave up in frustration dealing with Sun legal who were not interested in releasing any code. Unfortunately, this is the 5th time I've seen this happen with their API development work. You'd think I'd have learnt by now...

of the business, so I wouldn't be too concerned about being left high and
try on visualization tools and expanding current applications, as this is
where they see dollars coming from.

I would be. From what I've seen publically, nobody at Sun is working on J3D any more. Kelvin, I believe is taking bug reports, but not doing any bug fixes. Mark Hood is floating around but no idea what he's doing these days, and that's it. There's nobody left. DougT isn't working on J3D, and hasn't AFAIK for the last 12 months or so. There ain't nobody else home in j3d land at Sun.
