In my opinion, something could be more important than that feature: a
better sound support, especially to get sound working in a universe with
more than one View / Canvas3D (which actually doesn't works also if the
sound is initialized for one View only) and MP3 / OGG support.

This type of debate is great and just what we had hoped for from the
Java 3D community, keep it up !

Adding extensibility (which would include access to the lower level
rendering system) to the Java3D API is something we are interested in.
This (along with many other possible directions) will be discussed
formally as part of the JCP process. In the meantime let's keep these
discussions rolling.....

It's for applications like this that Xith3D is well suited. Access to
OpenGL is there if you need it (so long as you don't mind the loss of
potential portability to other bindings or API's such as DirectX).

Do you believe that Java3D should (or even can) change one of it's
fundamental ideas and allow direct access to OpenGL? Does Java3D even
need to do this when there are alternative scenegraphs which already
offer that ability?
