I agree with you. One of the big strengths of J3D is that it contains a 3d engine and that it isn't only a plain interface to a graphics layer. In my opinion it would be acceptable if some OGL-related functionalities became part of it but only _beside_ the existing features. All other people who are looking for a plain OpenGL-wrapper can find other solutions than Java 3D.

Hi,
I work with Java 3D in context of an Immersive Virtual Reality (CAVE) set up, and we have adopted Java 3D into the development because of it's portability. When an application uses the ConfiguredUniverse, this means that you can ultimately port it across the web, to any desktop configuration supported by Java 3D, to either OpenGL or DirectX configurations, wands, gloves, mouse, keyboard... the possibilities are endless. If Java 3D development becomes only OpenGL based, then this undermines the whole point of Java and Java 3D being portable.
I don't think that's what we ultimately want.

I hope the good ideas in Xith3D will be moved across.
In general, I hope the various communities working on Java-based scene graph layers will consolidate their efforts.
I would love to see Java 3D become only OpenGL-based, with more low-level access to OpenGL available if necessary. Think... OpenGL extensions. JOGL and JOAL could come on board too.
--- I'd also like the people who were so very, very sure that Java 3D was dead and buried to explain the inner machinations at Sun behind this sinister development (:)).
