Listening to some of the Oracle podcasts, they bought PeopleSoft, JD
Edwards etc - definite product overlaps - and are continuing with them
all. They even went further announcing "applications unlimited" -
basically keep paying and Oracle will keep supporting the version you
are on (for a long time). I think this sort of announcement was to
squash fears they would be dropping products they bought out. I don't
think it should always be assumed that squashing out one of two products
makes good business sense - if you loose customer share as a result to
other competitors.

Oracle may of course try to merge some product lines where sensible.
Wasn't it the recent Java Posse podcast with Oracle saying they were
pushing ahead with WebLogic, but moving good stuff out of the Oracle
server into WebLogic? - I particularly found interesting the discussion
of the different JVMs - the fact that Oracle's JVM is designed
specifically to sit in the database engine for efficient stored
procedures etc with extensions to share classes better etc. The Sun JVM
did not do this, and neither does JRocket. It made sense to me that they
had JVMs targeted at specific niche problems. If you are big enough,
the benefit is worth the cost.

Interesting days...
