it sounds like they had a maintenance page at some point, so perhaps
catastrophy happened and then they worked out how to change to a
maintenance page.  we shouldn't judge when we don't know what
happened.  it might not be rocket science but it is logistics.

if it was case of they just pulling out the plug (on purpose), then of
course that would suck.

did the site change?  if it did, perhaps they scheduled a proper cut
over but it didn't go to plan.  who knows.
