Sun essentially forced Google to either (1) take the path they did or
(2) go another way entirely than Java by the combination of high pricing
and lack of recent innovation on Java ME.
I think Oracle should be rejoicing that Google took path #1 -- and
trying to build bridges to make Android into Java ME's next generation /
replacement.
Instead this suit has the potential to be quite damaging.

This could kill the community around Java and force Google to decide
on a new language for Android. Should that happen, Google has enormous
power in its hands at deciding the next big language. Who knows how
Apache, IBM, and others will react. Oracle might be flexing its
muscle, and part of me hopes Google calls its bluff. If not and it
walks away from Java, then a part of me hopes Oracle gets what is
coming to them for killing the goose.

So, the obvious solution is for Google to stick it to 'em, ditch
Java, adopt another of the JVM languages (Scala, etc) so the port

Seriously, this makes me mad too. Bad move for the community,
which Dick always says is the true strength of Java.
This seems to me to be a little like when Linus was put in a
position of having to pay to manage the source for Linux, so he
surprised just about everyone and invented Git. The smart guys at
Google may just decide to leave Oracle's party for good. I think
that Oracle thinks that their position is stronger that it really is.
