Perhaps this is a good time to mention something which has been on my mind for some for a while but have been debating whether it has been worth mentioning.
One part of being a Java developer what to me it felt like "Sticking it to the man!". Even with Sun having control Sun did not feel like "The Man". Sun missed deadlines and sometimes had technology which was disappointing or flaky but didn't feel like "The Man". Oracle totally feels like "The Man". This was true long before Oracle bought Sun. It is easy to dislike .Net because it is owned by "The Man". Unfortunately thanks to Oracle Java is owned by "The Man" (IBM is "The Man" too as is Apple). I don't know I feel much loyalty to Java anymore but I also don't have particular loyalty or likelihood of loyalty to anyone else either. Even C/C++ which is somewhat cross platform and not owned by any one company is a problem. Sooner or later any real application would need to plug into some native libraries or code and as soon as that happens you are being whipped by "The Man" who owns that native platform. Do I get whipped by one "Steve" or the other "Steve" or "Larry" or maybe whoever owns Adobe or IBM? Programming natively for Linux would have definite "Sticking it to the man" potential. The pragmatists in me thinks "Probability of finding paid job which involved native application development for Linux"? It is not impossible but compared to finding a Java or .Net job... I don't know what to do. I feel like I am at sea in a barrel just kind of drifting. Maybe the truth is the IT Industry is controlled by a bunch of monolithic greedy money grabbing self serving corporations. I don't want to believe that but it really feels that way. What can I do about it anyway? Talk about David vs Goliath. I wonder if Tor and maybe Jonathan Giles might "Stick it to the man" and leave Oracle too as seems to be the done thing amongst the prominent former Sun people but that is their choice and where would they go? -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "The Java Posse" group.
