This is another sad chapter in Java's history...
In my opinion, pulling out of JavaOne this way is not going to
help the Java community now, or is it ? Especially for people
not related to Oracle. And certainly for those who were counting
on Google's sessions.
Sorry to say it, but this was not exactly a mature thing to do.
I'm pretty sure that Google didn't have any choice from a legal
standpoint.
Again in my personal opinion, I miss the point about how this is
going to hurt Oracle. I would agree were Google to abandon Java
altogether right now to start on their own. But I guess they
aren't. I'm afraid this only hurts Java and its community.
I think Oracle is irrelevant to Java's future just like Sun has been
irrelevant to Java's future for the past ten years. This lawsuit is
very unfortunate but it won't have much effect on Java overall.
To say that Sun has been irrelevant to Java for 10 years is a gross
overstatement by any stretch. The last couple of years there's been a
pronounced lack of direction from Sun, but Java 5 was certainly not
irrelevant, for instance.
