Let me clarify: Neither carriers no vendors want that. And since it's prohibitively expensive to enter the market (building wireless networks is just too expensive), you have just maybe up to four carriers in most countries which will fight becoming a dumb pipe as long as they can. There's no doubt that this isn't ideal for customers, but they don't call the wireless shots. As for computers: Only Microsoft and Apple really make money in the PC business, the vendors don't.
