Yeah, giving to the community is stupid and should be discouraged at all times
;)

Seriously though, this is a) still a proposal and b) Oracle (and other
interested parties) will still be contributing resources to the project

IMHO (and speaking personally) the main reasons to move Eclipse are because
they're a neutral foundation with a clear governance/dev process and lots of
experience with managing IP. There have been several discussions on the mailing
lists about these issues, and the Eclipse proposal is a good solution - they
also have other projects at Eclipse, so it's familiar to them.

Well I can think of one reason (but no idea if this is shared by Oracle or not)
- Jenkins are still working out the details of their governance plan, so AFAIK
there's no neutral foundation/organization to propose moving it to - I don't
think it would be a good idea to suggest assigning rights to a single company
or individual, otherwise we'd basically end up with the same issues that people
were worried about to begin with.

Note that the organization question is on the agenda of the next Jenkins
governance meeting (11th May)
https://wiki.jenkins-ci.org/display/JENKINS/Governance+Meeting+Agenda - and one
of the listed organizations is EF (Eclipse Foundation) so hopefully we'll know
more tomorrow.

There are plenty of competing open source projects at various organizations
like Eclipse, Apache, etc. - including many that implement the same
specification. Healthy competition can be a good thing for users, as long as
standards (and unofficial standards) are respected to help people avoid getting
locked in to a single solution. But then again, I wouldn't mind it if we could
merge things back at a neutral place (like Eclipse).
