Hi Paul,
A screen-reader, by it's nature, what it has to do, and how it has to do it,
is processor, and memorey intensive.
If we weren't useing a screen reader, the same issues would still be present
when useing other resource intensive applications,
such as audio, and especially video editing applications, and gaming
When sightedd users try to run multiple applications while performing a
resource intensive task as mentioned above, they
experience similar issues, as we do, only they see them.
These same issues seem greater to the blind user, since we are depending on
audible feedback.
There are many processes in the computer that compete for processor time,
and some have priority over others
unfortunately, a screen-reader isn't a top priority in the operating system.
HTH,

I am running a XP Pro machine with 1 GB RAM and JAWS 7. Hate to say
it, but increasing the memory from the original 512 MB didnhelped
JAWS run better...but not much.

I might be wrong, but I've often wondered if the resource problem
doesn't come from Eloquence and that a separate soundcard or speech
synthesizer might solve a great part of the problem.

I've also wondered if different JAWS configurations are available,
i.e. a version for users who don't use the braille functionality, for
instance. Pardon my ignorance; I might be way out in left field on
both ideas.

Paul
