A computer service specialist I know told me that even a busy desktop
(with background image), system sounds and things like automatic
update agents deprive the computer of resources everytime it's
booted. I have blanked my desktop and have removed many programs
from the startup sequence. It does in fact, help. Skype, AVG and to
a lesser
degree my N.D.A.S. (Net Disk) manager all consume quite a lot of
RAM...so I will try removing some of the less-essential apps from the
startup. Wish me luck!
Paul
P.S. Thanks to all for informative answers to my rather ignorant questions.
