I think you just answered the problem, I installed an English non-Tandem
build. Do I install the tandem build over the top of what I'm running?

I think it could be for one or more of the following reasons:
- You have JAWS installed in a language where Check for Updates feature
is not available. As far as I know, the only languages besides English in
which this feature is available are Dutch, French, French Canadian,
German
and Spanish; I don't remember if Brazilian Portuguese too.
- You specified a special update code or Registry key to disable
checking for updates.
- You are using an English non-Tandem build.
- You are running JAWS as a portable copy.
