Hi David, Rick, Erick & all:
Just had to insert a word or two into this thread: I loss my vision in 1973 and retrained as a computer programmer *(I was an accountant). Computers and HJ provided me with 25 years of good income before retiring. I have every version of JAWS beginning with version 1 and now 10. Eric I think you will recall I worked 19 years for the Lee County Florida School System as a systems analyst, here in Fort Myers. I don't know what I would have done without computers and JAWS, we have came a long ways from version 1.
Thanks to all,
George R. Marshall

Bravo Gerald. It is comments like yours below, that help remind us at
Freedom Scientific just how important our work is to others. I hope you
don't mind, but I'm going to share it with others here at the company.

Eric Damery

Learning JAWS was definitely worth it, even though I have no intention
of returning to work. I use my computer strictly for personal benefit,
mostly email and web surfing and I try to learn something new every day.
A year ago, I couldn't even type, let alone use a computer. But after a
few sessions at the rehab center which furnished me with my
JAWS-equipped computer, I just started picking up things on my own. Try
listening to the JAWS Basic Training Daisy books at your own pace.
Don't worry if you don't understand something. That's what this email
list is for. Don't feel pressured to learn JAWS just because it might
enhance your employment prospects. A talking computer is also a
wonderful tool for personal enrichment. And think of all the fun your
dog is having playing with the keyboard. Maybe he can become a canine
geek.

Well, at least I can then say that I have learned something new,
although
not working, and can read some books, and listen to some music, do the

mail: etc. I thought this was the case, because saw an unemployment
rate
for the blind of 70 to 80 percent and often say would the sighted
population put up with that? Why do we as blind people put up with it?

Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] my questions: about Jaws and the
computer:

hello well speaking from my experience I have not gotten a job
doing
anything on the computer or off of it so the idea of jaws helping
people try
to find work is kind of a joke at least it has been my
experience. when you
think that 99.9 percent of people 1 have never herd of jaws or
screen
readers or adaptive technology and 2 people still wont give blind
people a
brake where jobs are concerned then I really don't think this is
going to
change any time soon and also another point 3 most adaptive
technology like
jaws etc is to expensive for most blind people to be able to pay
for on
there own and so because it is so expensive it is really not
worth spending
that much money on. I mean sure I have jaws and I use it every
day but to
just get jaws and all this adaptive equipment just for the hope
of trying to
find a job is kind of pointless because the un employment rates
are so high
and amounst blind people it is really high and I don't see that
changing any
time soon. well I will get off my sope box now. from Mich
