Yes, Excel is one way to do it, but an advantage of using Word with your
info in a list (not a table) is that you can tell it which word to sort on
in each line.  So for example if your list is written first name followed by
last name, and you want to sort on last name not first name, then you can
tell the sort to look at the second word on the line.  I hope that makes
sense.

Obviously I need to apply some rust remover to my supposed word skills. 
Thanks to all of you and yes if further help is required I'll be back. Check
this out though at my wife's suggestion I dumped the entire list in to excel
and was able to sort it. Still I should know how to do it in word so I'll
save all of these instructions.

Would you believe it's under the tables menu.  My choices in the sort dialog
are 'paragraph' and 'field 1'.  I was tinkering with a list, so did 'field
1' and it sorted neatly.
