and I have had no troubles with windows XP, jaws 13, and office 2003 and/or word viewer 2010

one thing I would do is go to the start menu shortcuts, hit the apps key on the application link, open the properties dialog, and in the box where it says run: combo box arrow down to "maximized" and try opening it and reading something this way.

Funny, I've had absolutely no problems with Word 2003, jaws 13, on a Windows 7 64-bit machine.
I just checked, and zoom is set to 93%, if that makes any difference.
