Well folks, here's my experience:
When I hit the numpad 5 by itself, it says the letter and then the phonetic.
However, for the whole word (jaws key and 5), it says the word, then spells 
it, and that's all she wrote!!!
(it doesn't spell the whole word phonetically).

That's interesting I just did a test in this email and using the keys you
said..jaws key and the numpad 5 and it spelled the word it was on..default
and also did it phonetically.
I looked in my configurations manager and the item is checked so must be a
flukey thing on your end..
