I hear you about the big icons. In some respects it can look a bit like a kid drew the form inputs in crayon and thus wasted a lot of screen real estate. My mind has changed a little on that thought, though as now I have a 7" tablet with the same resolution as my 24" desktop screen. I think the key will be for the layout to be correctly responsive, but the first step in that is for me to be correctly responsive and try iterations that reflect yours and similar suggestions.
