Hello,
I didn't intended to generate this list of "I agree" messages so I feel the
need to clarify what I wanted to say:
I perfectly understand that the main effort is on development and that one
of the rules of the Open Source movement is some kind of "help yourself".
I don't intend to suggest that other guys, must come and do my job (well if
someone loves to wash dishes.. just email me..).
The "free" item in Open Source has a little, a perfectly normal price, it
this "help yourself" and I'm ok with that.
This said I'm for let's say philosophical reasons a fan of the Open Source
movement and would like to use Open Source software when I can (and I
evolve in an environment where the price is not the most important item)
Right now I'm working on a pilot for an intranet portal with a HR emphasis.
Although I'm absolutely not required to do this I'd prefer to use an Open
Source solution and JetSpeed seems the one I'm looking for.
I can perfectly say to a customer "this nice application is based on a
community development effort", but I can't say "well, in order to use this
app, you just need to hack around the properties file according to the
documentation that is missing and if every thing is screwed, just try the
opposite way and pray" :-)))
And there are a huge lot of black holes for instance. For example, I still
don't understand why although I've set up the new InstantDB JDBC driver in
Turbine Properties, when I try 1.2b1 I get a class not found for the old
one....
The various path for the various settings are very cryptic especially under
NT and I strongly believe that the key to opensource application success is
to take NT in account. No OS war here, I really don't give a s...t about
the fact that NT is or is not a good OS. The fact is that inside the
companies, for departmental server there is (for instance) a lot of NT.
What I wanted to say is that the combination of the "bazaar" Open Source
and a "normal" documentation is possible, Tomcat user guide is becoming a
real impressive work and on the other hand, Struts distribution may be seen
as a standard for further releases.
I do know that a documentation will not be written by magic, and I'm one
among I suppose a lot of others, that would be very pleased to help....
