I've used both PowerSwitchII+SSR and PeterW's bottlerocket plug-in. I like them both. For me, the X10 gear was certainly less expensive (time and USD) than the PowerSwitch parts. Currently, I'm using the bottlerocket solution to power my amps up and down.
