Aha - OK, I had tried selecting the isosurface, but it failed because  
I used
        isosurface $deoxyBpgSurf off

Now since
        color $deoxyBpgSurf lightblue
is correct, what is the rule for determining when to use the $ sign  
in front of an object name?
