Would it do any harm then, to allow the $ prefix at all times? Seems like it would simplify things.

color $someObject yellow

center (atomno=3)
center $someDrawObject

draw line1 (atomno=3) (atomno=4)
draw line2 (atomno=5) (atomno=7)
draw line3 $line1 $line2

center $line3

isosurface mySurface select(model=1.2) molecular

color $mySurface blue

That sort of thing.
