while i am to be relocating soon to lovely and liberal manhattan,
i must defend my poor state whilst still a resident.
salt lake city has one of the largest gay populations per capita of any city
in the country.
while that does not necessarily mean there is no homophobia (i believe there
is homophobia nearly everywhere, as i believe there is racism everywhere)
we are suprisingly open about this particular issue.
please let's not go making statements about whole geographical areas based
on misconceptions.
i don't believe either of these women meant to cause any harm to the
children they chose to bear. living in the public arena means they are
subject to a scrutiny that you and i don't have to face. it is easy to judge
from our safe perspectives.
i also resent the implication that women (for whatever reason) should adopt
instead of going to lengths to have their own children. would adopted
children be somehow less damaged by a very public split of their adoptive
parents? of course not. should lesbian women not be allowed to bear children
because of their sexual preference? no way. how did the world react to the
SEVEN medically created and drug enhanced mccoy (sp?) babies in iowa (or
wherever it was, i forget)? very little disdain, in fact-a new house, car,
free diapers, etc. how the world reacts to the news of etheridge and
cypher's split is their problem. i can hear jerry falwell stepping up to the
mike right now.
i do think it's silly to guess that these children will have any harder a
time with this breakup than the children of any other divorced family has
had. all children are put through the ringer when this happens.
balanced with the pain of dealing with everyone's sexual identity, parental
roles, etc. is the protection and privelege of wealth and fame.
my 2 cents,
alison e. in "homophobic" slc.
