It's none of my business.... but..... I thought she was saying that she
wasn't making money on the _sales_ of her records, but instead made it on
the _royalties_ of her songs. Was she saying that she made money from the
royalties from the DED songs but not on the album sales?
My take is that uhhmmmmm... "the industry" was uhmmmm.... riffing her. (I'm
not gonna point at any one individual as some of us have very real alliances
and paychecks to guard.) I mean, if the Cowboy Junkies can make money on
their own label, on their own records, why can't a big fish (who'll remain
nameless), who presumably can get better price breaks on EVERYTHING from
sleeve printing to pressing, to "parties for the press" make money on a
small release? Look at the JMDL artists. Are they ALL losing money? (I
hope not and I really doubt it.) Look at the burgeoning indie movement. If
there's no profit to be made on small runs, how do you explain that?
If I have an ax to grind it's that the industry (not naming names) has given
Joni a complex about not making money and I for one, do NOT believe one
word. She thinks that the Public (what ever that means) has turned its back
on her. (Yet paradoxically, she knows that she's a survivor in a
flash-in-the-pan world. How could she "survive" if people have "forgotten"
her?!?)
It could be also that she's in a delicate position and doesn't want to brag
about her wealth. It's unbecoming so she goes around saying, "Ohhhhh....
I'm not making anything!" It's a posture very popular in farming
communities where they live quietly on the family farm and when the kids are
old enough, SURPRISE!, Ivy League college! (My first love, circa 1975.)
Anyway, this pauper attitude is coming from a former prairie girl who lives,
let's remember, in Bel Air!
I don't really care how much she's worth. To me, her worth in this world is
her WORK, not her WEALTH.
