Woah. You've changed the issue with this statement - tube vs solid state/ analog vs digital... I think what you're talking about has to do with the fact that digital recording is finally reaching state of the art hi-fi capability. High- end AD/DA converter technology has improved (and continues to improve) drastically in the past 10 years. I doubt classical mastering engineers have known 'digital is better' for that many years, because it simply hasn't been, even with big budgets.
