Sometimes, they're forced.

Many of 'em are tied to the tools, and they go where the tools go. Back
in the WFWG and NT3.5 days, I watched a photoshop user used to Macs
fight with WFWG and Photoshop.

Photoshop apparently liked to manage its own swap. So it would get
the list of free blocks on the disk, and then allocate 'em to itself,
but without going through the bother of actually using the filesystem.

He'd lock up his machine in about a day and a half... no free disk
space, but no temporary files anywhere on the disk. Rebooting didn't
help, unless the scandisk (or whatever it was called) was run, to
reclaim the "unallocated" blocks floating around in FAT limbo.

"Just do this when you have this problem" didn't work. "Call Stewart"
was *much* easier to remember.

So.

I dropped the scandisk invocation in his autoexec and gave him strict
instructions to shut off his machine EVERY NIGHT.

The downside of finding a workaround was that the company didn't
consider getting him a Mac after that. The problem was fixed. A
daily reboot was an acceptable fix. . .

He didn't care. He just wanted to use photoshop. The OS underneath
didn't matter to him. He used photoshop. Everything else was beneath
his notice.

Kinda like emacs users, really, when you think about it.
