I'd love to know what those arguments are. It's too likely they consist of "We don't want people to think that just because the job could top out at a certain number means it's a personal insult to them if their offer isn't the top figure" Usually, no salary range = they want to get you in the door without knowing what crap they want to pay so they can try to talk the position up as much as possible.
