I've seen the load on MythTV recording HD in the 5% range when just recording.
Recording is not a very CPU intensive op but I guess constantly driving video 
and audio outputs could be somewhat 'expensive' and even more so if doing
buffering too. Just turning off that buffering and playback decoding is going to
drop power usage considerably. Turning off LEDs is a noop compared to turning
the disk and keeping the CPU going even in reduced mode. Also nice is that
they turn off the PS cooling fan.

But it's good they have that option and I should probably see what Tivo has in
that regard.
