I don't know anything about the hardware/firmware, but the fan(s) turn off, the current draw drops, there is no signal output on the video or audio outputs, all LEDs (except the Record LED) turn off. So, I conclude only the embedded computer and the tuner (or in the case of two programs recording, tuners) are on during recording, unless I turn the unit on to watch TV (or a recorded program).
