Ayup.  That's the problem with modal states.

You have to ask "What state am I in?" before doing any work. By banging the ESC key so much, vi users effectively create a "home mode" and always extend from there.

However, emacs users do the same thing because of modal commands. There it's called C-g.

I do tend to bang C-g quite a bit (although not normally as much as ESC in vi, but I chalked that up to inexperience. Apparently it may not be.) Generally I do so in the context of incremental search and macro definition.
