Why is it a problem?

Yup.

And when I stop my bike at a light, I downshift and position my left
foot... creating a "home mode" when I'm riding a bike.  It's a
comfortable metaphor.

Modes are where one sees 'em.

It seems to be a better solution than my habit of just closing the emacs
window and starting it up again...
